Actually ran the 'upgrade' on one of my home PC's last night, took maybe 20 minutes and whammy it was done. Seems to have done a decent job. Will play with it more tonight to see what all it really goofed up.

So should I do this on an older laptop? I got a popup from windows last night saying the upgrade to 10 is free (I figured it was at cost when I've seen it in the corner of my OS for the last X months). I'm on a laptop from like 4 years ago with Win7 (the custom Alienware version).

ive seen this discussed on some other forums. i havent read the article or delved too deep into it but from what i gather it doesnt actually search your hard drive. its just if you install an update that was downloaded automatically by w10 it checks the authentication certificate. at least thats what ive heard people arguing about.

needless to say i always wait a year or two before i upgrade to the latest version of windows. in fact im planning on building a new rig within the next couple months and im fairly sure ill still use windows 7

so today after worked i was checking my email and i got a notification pop up in my tool bar saying i can upgrade to win 10 for free. anyone else seen this or is it a sham?

im not really interested in upgrading right now but it said something about reserving my copy. if i could reserve it and use it a little later down the road when i build a new rig i'd be interested in it.

That little icon in your Taskbar has been around for a few months actually. It's legit from MS.
