Internet Speed

So I live on a farm without access to DSL or cable. I used to game in Verizon MiFi which was basically a tethered cell. Good speed and low latency for first 3 years then caput. I now am using a direct line of sight internet which rocks though does experience some lag at times. Usually 50ms ping which is good for my circumstance. Well finally to my question. I only have a 1 time free change so want to use it wisely. This is expensive as hell, I pay way too much over 150 for the Internet which is 3mb up and 3 down. I can upgrade to 6mb down and 1mb up for same price really. What is better for gaming? I understand 1 mb up is probably low end but for upcoming games is it enough? Any input would be great as I know you are all smarter than I in regards to these type things. My 3 and 3 is more then enough to still play DAOC without any issues.

IMO, you would not notice any difference between 3 up and down vs 6 down and 1 up for gaming. No game that I know of is using anything close to 1mb up or down, so you are fine with either of those setups. If you are gaming, using voice chat, streaming twitch, and downloading porn all at the same time, you may have a problem with the 1mb down though :)

i concur Kev knows what he's talking about. he was unfortunate and suffered the wrath of JimBob down the street using up all his bandwidth for a good many years.

I'd personally be leary of 1Mb Up. If you are gaming and try/want to do anything else, you will likely impact your gaming experience. I suppose if you're not playing a FPS or in a heated raid where timing is important, then it might not bother you too much.

Personally I wouldn't change to 6Mb Down/1Mb Up, but that's just my opinion.

if any other internet service provider were in my area or even if comcast offered slower speeds for a lower price i'd certainly downgrade. i have a 30 down and 6 up and i can watch streams, have a download going and still have my ping below a 100 in a game.

even a few years ago when i had a 10 down and 2 up i could still watch a stream and play a game with a sub 100 ping. in fact as hard as it is to believe i remember doing an UBRS run back in WoW on a cell phone modem that had a speed equivalent to a 56.6 modem and while i couldnt have a download running my ping in wow was still manageable at around 250-300.

its up to you ultimately. ive never had a problem with my ping in game even when i had much lower speeds. to each their own
