Cell Phone

Now that I'm back in the US, I need to get a phone. What features should I be looking at? What phone would you guys suggest if you had to buy new and didn't have a subscription plan or anything restricting you?

This.....

Also, you can't go wrong with a Galaxy S4 or an iPhone 5S if you are so inclined to spend the money. They'll both do whatever you want them to, breaking down to preference of android or iOS really. Go play with them and see what you like.

My .02 is that android has too many hardware platforms to support. In result you get buggy applications or flat out don't work depending on your phone. If you do go with a android I would highly suggest you stick with like google nexus as you can get the vanilla loads so you don't have to wait for the other manufacturer's to bastardize their OS before being able to upgrade to the latest and greatest OS.

With Iphones their are pro's and con's with Itunes policing all the applications. While they have to certify or agree to host your app the good news is that you tend to get more stable and tested apps on apple's limited hardware platform. But I really do hate itunes with a passion.

You can root or jailbreak either of the phones if desired. I don't have too much experience rooting andriod phones but I have done my share of jailbreaking. This allows you to get applications through app store called cydia to download non apple certified apps. I am in no way a apple fan boi but i do feel due to the things outlined above they do make a superior product when it comes to reliability and performance.

From an app perspective, I feel like Android has gotten a lot better since 4.0. My HTC that ran the older version kinda sucked. I like my Samsung GS3 for functionality and apps. It's more my Sprint service that I don't care for.

As far as HTC goes, my brother has an HTC One and it's pretty nice. There are definitely some advantages of going with a Nexus phone, which is basically the Google flagship phones. They get a non-customized version of Android and get updates right away as Chad mentioned. Samsung, HTC and others add a bunch of shit you can't delete unless you root it. Their phones are still pretty good though.

Matt's Jenny just got a Galaxy S4 mini and I thought that was pretty nice. It's the same form factor as the iPhone, so if you don't like the size of the rest of the Samsung phones, that one might be right for you.

Though I have no experience with them, I know a few people with Windows phones and they love them. This especially true if you take a lot of pictures. The camera on the Nokia is superior to what either Android or iPhone put out.

I also am a realist and that's why I'm going Windows phone next year. :) I hear only good things about Windows phones. Lumia 925 / 1025 are the flagship phones for that.

If you go Android go Nexus 5. It's the Google phone. No BS bloatware or stupid buggy custom UIs. It's the best Android experience you can get. Plus you get updates typically day 1 vs 3rd party vendors are 6 months to a year behind. For instance 4.4.1 is the latest version of Android and my Samsung S3 just got 4.3 a month after 4.4 came out.

Then you have iPhone. I hate iTunes with a passion. Otherwise it's a solid phone.

Glad this came up. We're getting ready to upgrade our phones and I've been looking seriously at the Windows phones. I absolutely will not give Apple a penny of my money so Windows phone it is.

Thanks. Good point on the Android versions and the modifications that some of the providers make. I'm down to the Nexus 5 and the Iphone now.

I don't think you can buy a better phone than the Nexus 5. Unless you have a specific reason to want to go apple (lots of already purchased apps, for example) I would absolutely choose the Nexus 5.
