What's a junk rare draft?

Basically everyone that's going to participate, brings 45 cards, of which at least 15 are Rares, at least 15 are Uncommon, and up to 15 Commons. Need to try to balance colors, and have a minimum number of creatures, and just bring crap you'd never put in a constructed deck.
We shuffle all the cards up together and then deal out 3 x 15 card 'packs/piles' for each person to 'draft' with (kind of like 'drafting' my cube).

You can get rid of some stuff you'll never use, and get some new stuff you'll likely never use. But for the purpose of the draft and playing a few rounds with those whacked out crappy cards, sounds fun.

Do we wanna try 3/8 instead so Steve can make it? I can do either.

So, I wouldn't mind doing just a standard deck tournament. Personally, I feel like my biggest problem is that I never get to play with a deck long enough to really make it work and start feeling comfortable with it. I was working on this Red/Green deck and have made a few tweaks, but have really only played it a half dozen times. Now a new set is out and I haven't even really looked at it yet.

So, I think it would be cool if we all bring one or two standard decks and we have a double or triple elimination tournament. Everyone throw in $10-$15 and use it to buy booster packs that can be given to the top 2 or 3 winners as prizes.

What do you guys think?

A tournament might not be the best idea when you're trying to fine tune decks. I think it's better to just get together and play some fun constructed. We can sort of do Matt's idea and set up our time limit so we all get to play each other and see how your decks does against a lot of other stuff. Or bring a couple decks.

I was only suggesting a tournament for the style of play and put some incentive in it. I just want to get games in.

I know folks like drafts because they even the playing field a bit, but I think that's only true for those of you who are good already. It takes the edges away. If you suck, like I do, you suck even more with a deck you're unfamiliar with.

We can just get together and play whatever we have, that's fine. I will have my cube if we decide we want to draft at all. Otherwise we can just play what ya brung.

Rich, you should install Cockatrice, would be great for you to get in some practice.

Playing magic just on our weekends isn't going to cut it. Gonna have to dedicate a bit more time to it if you want to get the hang of it.

Oh I agree. I'm not expecting to become a pro, I'm just hoping to get some continuity with a deck by playing it as opposed to draft decks. I do have Cockatrice installed, but haven't played much with it. I'm intending to spend some time this weekend since I have friday night and saturday day off from the g/f.

I might take you up on that. Maybe hook up with you on Cockatrice / Mumble to discuss this weekend. Will let you know.
