From the creator of Wing Commander.

This looks like the most amazing game I've ever seen. The youtube video is an hour long but it really is worth watching.

Seen this on kickstarter. I'm pretty excited about it. I miss Wing Commander type games.

When Czar originally posted the vid on it, I kinda skimmed through it (as it takes me like 45 min to download 5 min of a video on my crappy Iraq connection) so I didn't think that much of it. While I was on my last vacation, I had a real internet connection and watched it...and a bunch more of the videos on the web site and now I'm stoked about this game. They are really going in depth and it looks to be a great game. (watch some of the "advertisements" for the spacecraft, they are like watching BMW or Lexus commercials). And with 19 million and growing to fund it and no Electronic Arts or other big production company to fuck it all up, this really has potential.

I can't decide if I should pick up the 30$ Digital Scout that gives the RSI Aurora just so I can get in and play with the hangar module or go big right away and blow 275$ for the RSI Constellation (ship that lets you have a AI gunner or another player man the turret).

Game looks sweet though.

Can you still back this or are you talking about paying for digital download?

NM, I found it. It looks like the cheap package and then purchase a doper ship as an add on would be good? Unless I'm misunderstanding.

You cannot "back" it like the original supporters did, you can't get the nice stuff they got, like lifetime insurance on your ship and some special ships (though when the game is released you can buy them in-game) but you can still pledge and get the game for only 30 bucks (and the standard ship).

As far as which to go with, depends if you want to spend real money or in game money. You could buy the cheapest package just to get in and then figure out what ship you really want afterwards and you'd have the standard ship to play with until you know what you want to buy. The cheapest one isn't really the crappiest ship, it is a really modular one that you can use for a long time if you upgrade it.

I'm rather attracted to the Constellation just because it allows for 2 people in the same ship, so you can have a buddy man the turrett, or if someone's ship gets blown up, you can pick them up and save them a "life". But, 275$ vs 30$ is a lot of RL money. On the other hand, if this is the next big game and a bunch of us would be playing, I'd see it as totally worth it.

I'm definitely gonna check it out. Hoping my existing machine can stand up to it though. One of the best things we all LOVED about SWTOR when we initially did it were the space missions. They eventually got old because there was a lack of variety, but in this game those missions are part of the persistent world.

I really like that there is a penalty for death, but that there is still some flexibility so it's not like you lose everything because you hit the wrong key one time.

I'm thinking to go for Digital Bounty Hunter which grants a bit longer insurance and more starting cash for $65.

I wouldn't buy a package based on the insurance. You can buy insurance with in-game currency for cheap:

"What is insurance?
Pilots in Star Citizen can purchase insurance policies for their ships, modifications and cargo. This ensures that your ship will be replaced and/or its modifications and cargo will be subsidized should you be destroyed in a fight or accident. As in real life, insurance policies must be maintained: you must pay a regular fee in galactic credits (the in-game currency) or your policy will lapse and you will not receive a payout or a ship replacement when your ship is destroyed.

Will this Insurance cost a lot?
Like in real-life insurance should be a relatively small part of your regular in game expenses which will also include paying landing fees, trade tariffs (if in a system with lots of infrastructure and law and order), fuel (if you don’t collect it yourself from a gas giant), buying cargo to trade, hiring help, making upgrades to your ship or even buying a whole new ship.
Some of the additional policies like upgrade or cargo insurance will be rated based on risk levels. Risk level 1 being the safest systems and risk level 5 being the most dangerous system that is insurable for cargo or upgrades. Any risk level over 5 is un-insurable. A risk 3 policy for cargo will cover you for all cargo losses in a risk 3 system or below. The higher the risk level of the policy the more it will cost. As with the base insurance this will not be crippling financially but instead be a reasonable running cost that relates to the risk / reward profile of the systems flown."

Also good info -

What happens if I don’t have insurance?
Your character will have to buy a new ship with any credits he has, or if he doesn’t have enough credits fly missions for a third party (both NPC and player) until he’s earned enough to buy his own ship again.

Will my insurance carry over to ships I earn in the finished game?
No, and you cannot transfer insurance policies from one ship to another.

Also - 10$ = 10000 in game currency.

So, I think the ship that you want is really 99% of what decides the package you want (unless blueprints and ship models and those kind of goodies matter to you). If you dig through their site, there are a ton of packages and probably one with every ship type included. Note: There is a difference between buying a pledge package and just buying a ship. Scroll down to check the "this package includes" to see which are the game packages and which are just the ship by itself. At the moment, I'm thinking the 30$ pledge package to get the game and the RSI Aurora and possibly add the RSI Constellation as a separate ship down the line based on if we get a crew together to play the game.
